Lynn Amsterdam - Artist Bio

Ms. Amsterdam is a self-taught artist whose creative journey began through photography. Early in her career, she was a member of the Professional Photographers Association (NJ Chapter). Her photography has been featured in restaurants, private collections, and exhibited at notable venues such as Galleria of Arte (FL), The Essex Fine Art Gallery (Montclair, NJ), The Cookman Gallery (Asbury Park, NJ), and The Fire Fly Gallery (Nyack, NY). More recently, her work has appeared in local galleries in Florida, where she now resides.

Although she was not born into an artistic family, nor formally trained in the arts, her life took an unexpected turn after a devastating car accident in 2009. With multiple broken bones, a metal plate in her clavicle, and a hip replacement, she was forced to leave behind her 32-year career with the State of New Jersey and a decade as a professional photographer. Out of this moment of hardship, however, emerged a new creative path: abstract painting.

Ms. Amsterdam channels her experiences, emotions, and skills into her canvases. The rhythm and movement she once learned through foil fencing in college now inspire the sweeping energy of her brushstrokes. When her hands could no longer build in the traditional sense, she discovered the power of building textures on canvas. Her art is both a testament to resilience and a celebration of transformation, reflecting her ability to turn personal challenges into vibrant, expressive works of art.
